Couple’s Therapy

$150 per session

I work best with committed couples who are seeking to:

  • strengthen or revitalize their bond

  • repair their bond after infidelity or another breach of trust

  • address an increasing sense of disconnection

  • escape a cycle of repetitive arguments

  • resource their relationship in the face of an acute stressor

In work with couples, I primarily use a model of therapy called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT suggests that distressed couples are drawn into a repetitive cycle of negative interaction where each person’s actions trigger the other person’s. The irony of this cycle is that it arises from each person’s desire to maintain stability in the relationship. We work from the premise that both people want connection with one another, but that frustration and fear lead to garbled communication and hurtful behavior. In sessions, we work with these emotions to clear the communication channels and actively establish more satisfying ways of relating.

Couple’s therapy doesn’t have to be a last resort! Gottman relationship research found that couples are unhappy for an average of six years before they seek couple’s therapy. The process is often much faster if you engage in therapy before resentment and hopelessness set in. I understand how daunting it may seem to invite a stranger into the private microcosm of your relationship; I endeavor to create a warm, validating environment where a new pattern of relating can emerge.
